Today I read this article in the New Yorker; it tries to explain the effect social media websites have on social activism. This is something that really gets me annoyed whenever I witness it, groups on facebook titled “Anti Geert Wilders”, “1 Million people against Government Run Health Care” or “Our Military Troops Deserve Better!” Alternatively of posting about it on a pretty isolated place on the internet where you’re basically only counting numbers. Why not go out there and try to make your statement clear with your actual voice? It’s completely understandable that groups try to start up a community of equal minded people when it comes to international issues like global warming, but when it’s something like local politics I see no reason why you should sit behind your computer screen and blast off your frustrations 140 characters at a time.

It's not so much due to social networking as to the general social apathy that our level of affluence has brought the recent generations.

Well it good for the fact at least these people do something, if not they would most likely just stay at home and voices would not be heard, surely the internet is a good thing in that on the internet freedom of speech truely exists.
ReplyDeleteWith computers and internet becoming more prominent and available... "community" is evolving. Whether this is a good or bad thing, I have no idea. But it's an interesting thing.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely agree, nothing has ever been accomplished sitting around complaining about it. Until people get out there and either lobby for the things they want or create a big enough stink that government takes notice, nothing happens. Get involved in a way that involves some effort, and maybe you'll actually accomplish something, instead of bitching anonymously and hoping it'll work out the way you want it to.
